General Submission Guidelines for kerning | a space for words
kerning is a biannual publication of writing from women and gender-diverse people.
Payment Options
In our efforts to make our small press transparent and equitable, we have added an option to our submissions drop-down menus. We offer three choices:
Pay It Forward: $14 allows you to pay for your own submission and for the submission of someone who may be in need at the moment. Paying at this rate helps increase access for others to share their offerings! Thank you for your generosity.
Base Rate: $7 is our regular submission fee.
No Fee: $0 We understand sometimes even a small fee is prohibitive and we want to make sure we get the opportunity to hear every voice. We do not want finances to be a barrier. Ever.
We accept submissions for kerning from women and gender diverse people.
All submissions are to be e-mailed to Toad Hall Editions at hello@toadhalleditions.ink after filling out the submission form below.
We are open to simultaneous submissions, but if your piece is accepted for publication in another magazine or journal at the same time, please contact us immediately.
We will contact you within 1-2 weeks via e-mail to let you know your submission has been received. You will be notified within 30 days if your piece has been selected for publication.
We reserve the right to edit accepted pieces.
Each contributor whose work is accepted will receive a $75 honorarium.
Each contributor living in the United States will receive 1 copy of the journal that their work appears in. If you are contributor from outside the U.S. we can no longer mail a copy to you for free. The high cost of postage, combined with the complexities of overseas customs documents have made it impossible at this time. We are continuing to look at other shipping options. If you live overseas, your work is accepted and are willing to pay the postage costs, we will be glad to send you a contributors copy.
Women and gender-diverse people submit your:
Poetry 1-5 pieces of poetry.
Short Fiction up to 4000 words.
Creative Nonfiction up to 2500 words.
Essayettes up to 1000 words.
Flash Fiction up to 100 words.
You’ll then be asked to fill out a form with your contact details, some info about your submission and some background info, and from there go to your cart and check out.
After you’ve made your purchase, you’ll receive an email receipt, go ahead and send us your written submission(s) at hello@toadhalleditions.ink.
Important Things to Remember:
Name each document you submit with your name, and the piece’s name. Make sure your name and the piece’s name are also in the document itself.
Use the Theme Name in the Subject line of your email when submitting work.
We will contact you within 1-2 weeks via email to let you know your submission has been received.
You will be notified within 30 days if your piece has been selected for publication.

We look for originality and ingenuity from our authors. We want to be surprised, deepened, and expanded by what we read. We want our writers to take risks, to push the form (or cleave from it entirely), to bring their own, true voice to the table. We want you to see the world through new angles—tell us yours . . .
